New head gasket needed for Civic?

Last weekend my GFs 1994 civic ex with ~100k miles overheated while we were up north. We were running errands in town and all was fine, stopped for gas on the way home, all was fine. When we got home after ~10 miles of highway driving I heard a bubbling noise from under the hood. Coolant was boiling in the expansion tank. It turned out to be a bad cooling fan switch, which was finally replaced today along with the thermostat and coolant. When the mechanic started the car he said it was blowing a white sweet smelling smoke(burning coolant). He says it likely needs a new head gasket and maybe a new head.
Here is the deal, It didn't overheat for that long, although the coolant boiled. Later that night we dropped the car off at the repair shop. Drove into town with the heat full on. On the drive the car was at normal operating temp, and it drove normally PLUS it wasn't emitting any white smoke from the exhaust. I know what overheating will do to a head and head gasket, but is it really all that probable that a new head gasket is needed and maybe even a head?
