Kirk,
I own a 1996 850 Turbo wagon with 99,000 miles. It's a very fast, comfortable, safe car. These are high-pressure turbos with 222hp and 221 ft-lb of torque. The auto tranny is well matched to it. The turbos come with leather, heated seats, power everything, the works. Mine also has the third seat, which folds away into the floor. The rear seats fold totally flat giving a huge cargo compartment. The front seats are the best I have ever sat in, period. The rear has a built-in booster seat for kids.
In my experience the 850 is great on long trips: 29-30 mpg on the highway, comfortable, ample passing power. The car has worked well for us even with two large dogs filling up the rear. Post-1995, all the 850s have SIPS, Volvo's side-impact system. I think it was optional in earlier models. The 850 is a FWD car but there were a few AWDs that made it here in the 1997 models. After that year, it's the V70 (same car), and many of those had AWD - but avoid that model in that year, due to expensive bevel gear problems.
Like Saabs, the 850 needs regular care. The other posts mention the ABS unit and the A/C issues and yes, those are problem areas. But like Saabnet, Brickboard.com is a great resource. Basic maintenance is every 5k, major intervals are every 30k. Timing belt every 70k. Some of the work is DIY friendly (like the tailgate rattle), but not all.
My car happens to be for sale; contact me off the BB if you'd like to discuss.
