I bought a 3 hatch. It is built in Japan of 95% Japanese parts..a real Mazda. I believe the 5 is also. My 3 has great space, and tall seats. It drives reminisecent of the c900...only much tighter. I have found it to be bone solid and great fun. 0 warranty trips to the dealer..just oil changes and a tire rotation. The brakes are the best of any car I've ever driven.
The 5 looks to be a better hauler...taller. I like the looks of the 3 better. I haven't driven a 5.
Word of warning...I drove a 3 for the "heck of it" in '04. I never could get it out of my mind...bought an '05...first nonSaab in over 10 years.
Mileage..2.3 auto has been in the 25-32 range. It seems to be increasing as I add miles...
