From my Toyota truck experience, check out the 4wd system for leaks; does it engage smoothly? Any idea when diff. oil changed? Re the engine, get a compression check if you can and look for head gasket leaks. Also pwr. steering pump; very expensive. Slop in front suspension can lead to some vicious handling problems, so check strut bearings/cartridges.
Otherwise, just the usual maintenance items like exhaust, rust. But you know all that.
180k isn't unreasonable for a decently maintained 4runner. I looked at a 96 this year to replace my Tacoma 4x4 but this was when gas was near $4 in NYC this summer. My Taco was getting 25 mpg hiway; 4 Runner rated at about 18 ish.
