Sounds like a $500 car to me, especially if you can see the rust easily. Sure you could get $1,000, but likely an "over allowance". An unfair negotiating tactic would be to bargain for a best price on the basis of no trade in, and then throw the trade in at the end and insist on $1,000 to close the deal. That'll get you another net $500 off if your car is indeed only a $500 car, more or less.
Depending on the state you're in you could donate the car and take a tax deduction for the retail Kelley Blue Book of around $5,200ish. Depending on your tax bracket that might make the most sense.
