Benz trans problem?

Had the joy of driving my friends 2005 MB CL500 (12k miles) over the weekend. Weird thing happened though, was facing down a steep slope and needed to back up, put it in reverse and the car drifted forward after I let off the brake. Needless to say I spun the tires a bit as I was about to hit something. I'm assuming this is not normal (drifting forward when in reverse), but I want to be sure I know what I'm talking about before I tell him his year old baby needs to go in for service. Thanks in advance.
