I looked at a 540i before I bought my 9-5, and I have a lot of experience with BMWs over the years. There are a few big issues with the V8 cars, most notably that you WILL have to replace the radiator about every 60k miles, if it lasts that long. They all crack at the inlet neck. If you're lucky it will do this slowly, rather than explosively - a lot of owners are not lucky in this regard. The water pump and other attendant cooling system stuff is not terribly long-lived either, so be ready to do all that stuff about every other radiator replacement, if not sooner. If it is an automatic, make absolutely certain the fluid has been changed about every 30k, or be prepared to replace that too; manuals are fairly bulletproof. I've heard of interior electrical issues on some cars. As mentioned, fuel costs will be high - figure on maybe 18mpg on average for a stock car in mixed usage, driven moderately. On the plus side, solid chassis, tons of power, outstandingly predictable handling on the limit (which is insanely high). Wonderful cars, but with some issues that limit their utility as day-to-day transportation appliances.
