Z3's had a very conservative sorta' retro design. If you wan't a 6 in a small roadster, I think it's the only choice. The Porsche Boxster has always been good competition, but a Boxter is not a retro or classic anything, and they're a little pricer.
I think the more cotroversial Z4 style will be the one to endure. Definitely a better automobile too, but who knows the future?
