...for all the reasons you listed/replaced. It was the first transition year to the WJ platform, (but the engine ignition setup was a carry over from 1998). Prior to 1998, ZJ Grand Cherokees were unibody construction. Also, only get a transfer case that goes from 2-4full-4part-N-Low. The 4-N-4 case fail at an alarming rate. Also, the trannies are known to go at about 170K miles, routinely failing there.
Finally, also beware the right front axle. They warp.
I loved my ZJ, but I also spent a bit on upkeep to replace front and rear diff pinion bearings, replace diff tranny, transfer case fluids, etc..., through the dealer. ONLY USE A 5 Star DEALER, and never use a private mechanic.
I finally gave her up at 183K when the water pump died while I was picking my mom up from the doctor in Manhattan on a 95 degree day. Old Jeeps require too much attention. I replaced the pump myself, and sold the car on Ebay for what I bought it for at auction. Then I bought a warranteed '03 Durango. Current ZJ driver Emailed to say he loves it.
