I have an 00 Viggen 5dr - Love IT!! My wife had an Explorer for the family car - Hated It! We wanted to get a sport wagon, I to wanted a 9-5 Aero Wagon. I just was not finding one available at the price I wanted to spend. I found an 01 V70 T5 for a great price.
Impressions:
Fast - While not as fast as my Viggen it is very fast. Has very similiar power ratings to the Aero wagon - 247hp and 243lbs of torque. I have never driven a 9-5 so can't compare directly.
Road feel - Not as connected as the Viggen, which you feel everything (good and bad,on good roads is excellent). The Volvo is a little more vague but rides nice and is very quiet and smooth. (better for a family car)It also has more ground clearance than my Viggen and probably the Aero Wagon.
Quality - build quality seem's just as good Saab's. Nice seats, good sound system some cool features.
Reliablility - Yet to be seen, I too was considering the V70R - I live in Montana and while AWD is nice, FWD is fine 99% of the time with studded tires. A friend has a 98 V70 awd and has had it in the shop alot.
So far so good - good luck in your search.
