1997 Toyota Camry Auto Trans Cable

My wife was driving our 1997 Toyota Camry (80K miles) when she said that the transmission did not feel right (like it was staying in first gear) and parked it. I tried to drive the car but it would not start like when you try to start the car when it is in drive. We had it towed our local indy who reported that the transmission cable (between the shifter and transmission) had broken. I have never heard of this happening before. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
