You can tell none of those guys have driven a relatively recent diesel car for very long...
Diesels create ALL the heat for combustion through compression so a car that doesn't get to warm all the way up like in short haul driving will suffer from carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. On an older indirect diesel like my Mercedes (the third I've had, spent about $7,000 to aquire all of them, total, just so you know where I'm coming from) that carbon will make the engine harder to start and give it poor performance, eventually it'll gum up the rings and kill the engine.
I had no idea the TDIs warmed up really slow but 15 minutes seems WAY too long, like bad thermostat too long... My '85 Mercedes 190D takes maybe 5 minutes of driving to get up to normal operating temp at around 10F (the coldest I've had it yet), idling it'd take forever to warm up, thats the nature of a diesel, they don't make a whole lot of heat idling.
If you drive less than 20,000 miles a year conventional wisdom says get an efficient gas car, more than 20,000 miles you might benefit from a diesel. I do 108 miles a day commuting which is around 27k/yr just to go to work and back... My 190D gets ~37-38mpg on summer fuel and maybe 35-36 on the crappier winter stuff.
