Flat engines, by their very nature, are laggy. Saddle one with a turbo and an automatic and, well, it isn't inspiring. I really think Saab did wonderfully with the styling of the 9-2x, but I have seriously concerns about the long-time ownership of such a car. A lot of the cosmetics are unique to Saab, and with the car only being built a couple years, finding that stuff down the road will almost certainly prove problematic.

I personally really dig the Mazda6 - I don't much care for the styling of the wagon's rear end, but there's no denying it's a competent car. I really, really like the 6 hatchback - definitely on the list of future cars for me. There are two in the parking lot at work, both with the Sport package. Very sharp looking car IMHO.

The 6 doesn't have the same type of fit & finish and overall quality you'd get with a genuine Saab, but somewhere between comparable and superior to the 9-2x. The V6 engine is the same mill as you'd find in a Taurus plus some Mazda gadgets - very reliable and a good performer. The four cylinder is shared with the Mazda3 and the Ford Focus and Ranger plus, of course, some Mazda gadgets... :) I've driven a few 6s, and I gotta say the four has plenty of go for getting around town. It's not stellar, but completely livable especially with a 5-speed. Interiors are comfortable and easy to use, although the seats aren't the best. They're fine for around town, but I'm not sure they'd be great for long distance driving. I've not done it though, so I could be wrong.

I share the concerns about VW over the long haul. The wagons out there that seem right to me are 9-5s, 6s, and Magnums, in that order. :)
