I am pretty sure that the base Legacy Wagon 2.5i still comes with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox. It is the best one of them all, really. I have driven the turbo and while nice, it is not THAT much faster than the new EJ251 with variable valve timing. At least it does not feel that fast to me. Not WRX fast...
Impreza Wagon is outstanding value for the price but its cargo volume is pretty small. Once again, you have about 1/2 the space of a SAAB hatch in real terms. But what a wonderful car! All the people who buy those generic Civics, Corollas and even Mazda3s don't know what they are missing!
Before having their first kid most people don't realize just how much stuff an infant/toddler requires. When I go for a long distance drive with my daughter, I can barely fit everything into my NG900. No way I could travel in a typical midsize car with a typical 14-16 ft3 trunk. Just not enough space... Think about what you need to take: pack-and-play, stroller, chair, potty (if not using toilet yet), large diaper bag, etc.
