It shouldn't surprise anyone who has looked at the Camry recently. When shopping for a new car a few months ago, we test drove the new Camry. I was very surprised by the obvious lack of quality on the interior. My 1996 Corolla had a better interior both in materials and assembly than this car had.
This might be a result of Toyota getting too big for its britches. How many different cars, trucks, and SUVs does a company need to offer? I just read that they are coming out with an SUV that will "fill the gap" between the RAV4 and the Highlander. Uh yeah, I'm sure there are a lot of customers that need and extra 1/2 inch of rear leg room than the RAV4 but not more than the extra inch the Highlander gives you. The more products, the more management; the more management, the more design and engineering by committee which results in more problems.
It should also come as no surprise to Toyota who last year hired a new quality czar. Obviously they knew something before CR did.
On a positive note, CR now recommends the 9-3!
