I was looking for a car recently and test drove many Impreza competitors before test driving the 2008 Impreza. I think that the new Impreza is a HUGE step in the right direction for Subaru. I believe sales figures agree with me.
The first thing that popped into my head as I started driving: wow, these are NICE seats. I test drove the base model. I thought that the seats were very similar in their comfort and suppot to the excellent seats I have in my NG900. They offered that elusive European quality of distributing my weight in such a way that you stop feeling them. I am sure many SAAB owners would feel right at home in those seats.
There was also MUCH more room, especially in the back seat. It was very roomy. Rear seat was very well shaped and offered very good support as well.
Ride quality was the other impressive thing about the new Impreza. Both of my CG8 Imprezas offer excellent ride/handling compromise but one cannot confuse them with a European car. This new model is very European in the way it offers exceptional ride quality without becoming a Lexus. The steering feel was excellent, as always -- perfect weighting, excellent road feel. Very informative.
Overall, the only reason that prevented me from buying the new Impreza was the dumb placement of rear seat top tether mounts for baby seats. They are placed in the rear of the cargo area (hatchback) in the way that makes it impossible to have a baby seat installed and bulky items in the hatch. Another very annoying change was the absence of an outside hatch/trunk lock. I hate the trend to eliminate mechanical locks on cars.
