We bought our '03 with 40K miles on it, with a CPO warranty and it has been excellent, now closing in on 70K and it runs like it did at 40K. The '03 and later 9-5s are very reliable and well screwed together.
Talk with the dealer. See if you can buy the car at the end of the lease and see if they can put the Saab CPO warranty on it. Then you have a warranty to 6 years or 100K miles and you won't have to think about repairs.
I have looked at but not driven the new Malibu and my impression is that it's a pretty nice car, but it is not in the same league as a Saab. It is made to be a mainstream family sedan. The Saab is, too, but the Saab has the upscale European flair and road feel that all domestics lack. Most noticeably, a Malibu with a 4 cylinder engine has no where near the performance of a Saab. You'll notice this the first time you have to pass a slow vehicle on a two-lane road or have to go up a big hill.
And for what it's worth, in the long run it is almost always less expensive to own and maintain a solid used car than to always have car payments and the luxury of a warranty.
