I've had an 00 manual 9-3, and 05 subaru outback xt (auto), and now have an 06 9-5 wagon (auto). My favorite is the 9-5 easily. I had the 9-3 and Outback while living in New England and now have the 9-5 while living in Arizona. However, if I was going back to New England, I would definitely get an all wheel drive car again. Likely an Audi wagon. The AWD on the Subaru with snowtires was just awesome, the AWD in the rain was great as well. The Saabs are definitely more comfortable, but a bit less reliable. I did have some electrical gremlins in the Subaru though and the 05-08s have a bit of lagging in the engine with th fuel management system around 55-60mph, you can definitely notice it, in fact Subaru has had some software updates to remedy it, they almost have it, but is still not totally dialed in.
The turbo outback gets HORRIBLE mileage though. I was lucky to get 22 or 23mpg on the highway with it. Typically about 17-18 mpg around town.
Both Subaru and Saab dealers (the ones I have worked with) have been good to deal with. Much better than Volkswagen dealers I have worked with in the past.
When I bought the outback though I really wanted an Audi a4 wagon, but just couldn't swing it financially, the Outback was a much better deal. Like I said though, when i move back, the Audi wagon will be the car.
