My husband is a wonderful person with many talents, but taking care of things promptly is not one of them. For about six months I had been joking "You can tell Peter's coming by the piercing screech of brakes." The broken strut had been rattling and banging since at least the spring. Plus, he's been putting off his 50,000 mile checkup for oh, about 2,000 miles now. So I was secretly a little relieved (well, not so secret, he's probably reading this; hi Petie!) when the car seemed to die, because all I could think was, "Well, at least we're going to get it fixed now."
Before you all start shaking your heads in disapproval about people not taking care of their cars, please know I am not like that, and I am super-vigilant about my Saab! (Gotta be...Saab has 125,000 miles and it's a fussy Aero; Volvo has 52,000 miles and it's a workhorse station wagon.) Many thanks for the advice!
