These are the first years off the platform change. i have heard of many horror stories about these years. The 1998-2000 is very robust even though its first gen AWD. I believe the AWD system changed in '01 but many problems came out of the platform change.
Personally I like '04-05 V70 either the R or T-5. The R is offered in a 6 speed manual.
I currently own a 1998 V70XC which has been a great car. I see Aaron G has had some problems with his, but mine has been extremely reliable and has been one of the best cars I've owned. So far only door lock stuff and the back breaks wear fast because of the AWD system. Easy DIY.
As stated... these are not very exciting to drive, but they are do-all 4-season cars much like the Saabs. They are also pretty comfy for 6 plus footers.
I specifically went for the dark grey interior otherwise you get a mismatch of tan/grey (chocolate in your peanut butter).
