My aunt had a 1999.5 (minor facelift) A4 2.8 Quattro. I was pretty young though and drove it around illegally a bit and then took my drivers license test in it. She traded it in for an '06 Acura MDX (booo - sucked) not too long after though. It was a very fun car to drive but I didn't have much to compare it to. I had only driven a 2004 Ford Taurus and 2001 Chrysler Town and Country back then. I liked being able to step on the gas pretty hard and not having the front tires peel out. The engine note was *pure heaven,* but it ran out of oomph pretty quickly. It also got miserable gas mileage.
Her husband has a 2004 A6 2.7t S-Line right now. I've driven it once and it seemed much slower (turbo lag) than my '01 9-5 3.0t and especially my Aero now. But it was incredibly refined and SMOOTH. I also never got to try it out on the highway at speed or anything though.
When the MDX lease expired in January (thank GOD) my aunt got another A4, a used 2006 3.2 Quattro. It's pretty nice, and handles well. But just like Saab I noticed quite a bit of "cheapening" on the inside between her 1999 and 2006. I still prefer my Aero, it has a lot more toys and is just as fast. I never really "abused" their cars while I was driving them so I don't know how they handle at their limits. Quattro just took care of the torque steer and front-wheel spin. Quattro is great in the snow too, but I'm convinced with a decent set of snows my 9-5 can go anywhere a car with Quattro can.
Bottom line, I love my Saab. Their Audi's have been in the shop ALL the time. To me, it's not worth the expense. But Audi has always been my number two to Saab.
