a tree. Went too fast on a wet, hilly and windy road. Kid is OK but nearly lost an eye. Passenger broke her nose. And hard as it is on those kids, it was a lesson for my daughter that, yes, nasty things happen to nice kids. This can obviously happen in any car and the nut behind the wheel is always the most critical part.
IMHO, you have to put a kid in a safe car. For some this means lots of mass and/or lots of airbags, which is OK. I think active safety --maneuverability-- is just as important, and one of the reasons I picked Saabs.
I ran my kid through some emergency maneuver and skid training when she was learning last winter, plus hard braking and steering practice with ABS, all on slick surfaces so she could feel the car at the edge of control. I hope it helps if she gets in a "situation" but also helps her realize that it's easy to go past one's abilities and that physics is always in play. Tire Rack has a "Street Survival" class that tours the country and I will sign her up for that when it comes to our area again.
