I'm not sure how well Subaru's sell in CA or AZ, but here in the inland northwest, I see them everywhere (mainly due to the AWD). There are three Sub dealers in the area vs one Saab dealer and the Saab dealer _just_ sold their last 2008 car (a Turbo-X). They have not had a single 2009 model on the floor. With that type of dealer support, it's really no wonder there are more Subs than Saabs.
Justin is correct about service costs as well. Subaru's a well know for their reliability so someone looking for an affordable and reliable AWD vehicle doesn't have a lot of choices. I think affordability, both in initial acquisition as well as long-term maintenance, is where the Subs shine. While the Saab may be close in actual sales price, I'm sure the high MSRP simply keeps people from entering the showroom.
I've looked at a few Subaru's and have been fairly impressed, all things considered. They have a very good range of products starting with the cheap Impreza to more expensive and up-scale(ish) Legacy GT and WRX. The entry level stuff is boring but the turbo stuff is not too bad. Toss in a vast dealer network and affordable maintenance, and you have a brand that knows it's customers and knows how to please them. That's something that very few brands can claim.
