That happens a lot on late model Toyotas, new ones on sale aren't that much, if any, more than new ones. It seems as if the consumer urge to buy just slightly used to avoid the perceived massive new car depreciation is stronger than the actual depreciation. The market is stronger than the supply. There's not enough almost new inventory versus the number of folks trying to get over on the car buying process so the prices on slightly used seem overinflated.
One note, the advertised units are often base models so the price may seem comparable on the new unit, but the used one may have more equipment. And buying an advertised unit from a Toyota dealer can be challenging. Many dealers feel that advertised models are for advertising to drive traffic through the door and then try and upgrade the customer, and not for actually selling. Dunno' if this is true for Toyota, but I see on other brands advertised prices that include rebates for military and college folks not available to the general public, or rebates tied to the finance source.
But yes, that's definitely the case, a new one on sale may be cheaper than a used one. Kinda' reminds me of the Saab buyer who is buying last years demo for a very satisfying and affordable price and never asks what a brand new one would go for which is often almost exactly the same figure or very close.
