I think the Boxster is a beautiful vehicle. I'm sure it's hard to resist.
The early Boxsters were more prone to problems than the later ones, however, they do not all have problems. There are many good, high mileage examples of Boxsters on the road today.
The key with any used Porsche purchase it getting a good pre-purchase inspection from a reputable, objective mechanic. This will cost you $300 - $350. Also, if the car doens't have any maintenance records, then I'd walk away from the deal.
The M96 engine used in the early Boxsters have been reported to have problems with cracks in the heads, as well as catastrophic failure of the intermediate shaft bearing. While this is extremely rare, it has been sensationalized on the web because it generally results in the replacement of the engine, which runs roughly $17K. A good, documented service history can help give you some assurance that you'll be okay, but it isn't any guarantee. The good news about this car is that it has been driven a bit. The garage queens that have less than 10K miles after 10 years tend to have more problems than the others.
If you're looking for more information, I'd suggest http://www.rennlist.com. It is a great site.
Good luck with your decision. If you end up buying it, just enjoy it and don't worry about stuff you read on the internet!
