Artificial scarcity to keep pricing high? I rented an Alfa 159 Turbo Diesel in Italy and am sold on the concept. Very good performance and incredibly good fuel economy, even when cruising at very high speeds on the Autostradas - even more important when fuel is $7 per gallon. My wife does not understand why I would want a Diesel car in the US when the price of fuel is higher than premium gasoline, but I think that I can explain it to her.
That said, I have to wonder why there is a scarcity of TDI models while there is a lot full of unsold gas cars at my local dealer. It has been this way for a couple of years, one would think that VW would manufacture to their demand unless they are playing pricing games. It appears to me that there is little difference between the gas and Diesel models other than the fuel system and some engine parts.
