I don't think fuel economy you got was all that bad for this type of vehicle. I have a 2007 BMW 328xiT (station wagon) with 230 hp 3 liter straight-six engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. No matter how hard I try, I am not able to coast more than 20.1 mpg out of it. With a cargo carrier on the roof I get 18.8 mpg. This is driving with two young kids -- smoothly and fairly slowly. I accelerate slowly and always try to plan ahead to keep my momentum.
With the same cargo carrier (Thule Atlantis 1600) I get about 28 mpg from my 2003 BMW 325i sedan with 184 hp 2.5 liter straight-six and 5-speed manual. Without the carrier I can get 32 mpg on long trips if I try (using econometer).
The 2007 all-wheel-drive 328xiT is almost 3800 lbs. The 2003 325i is 3200 lbs. GMC Acadia is almost 5000 lbs (yep, it's a murder wagon,) so fuel economy you got seems pretty reasonable. I would actually expect worse.
