The 2.0l is a dinosaur of an engine, quite stout and not prone to many problems. My sister has 190k on her '02 and despite a complete lack of maintenance still runs like a top. Comically, when she bought the car I warned her about all the standard failures to expect on Mk IV VWs - airbag issues, power window issues, coil pack issues, etc. - but she hasn't suffered a single one. Instead, she's enjoyed almost entirely trouble-free ownership. The only repair she's had other than standard maintenance has been a damaged evap system, which necessitated a LOT of disassembly and a $1200 bill. Not bad for a lightly driven but heavily neglected car with such high mileage.
To answer your question on the General BB, I'd dump the VW. There are lots of reasons to own a Jetta, but a 2.0l is not one of them IMHO. If you're looking for something cheap to get around in, a similar-year Zetec-powered Focus is a MUCH better drive.
