Having worked for VW and owned several, I can tell you they are not cheap to keep and if something goes really wrong VW will tell you it's your fault. V-dubs are noted for electrical problems and are only good to own when under warranty. On the upside, they drive great. Ditto for Audis.

Also, a Passat is really not a lot bigger than a 9-3, especially for 3 teenage boys. You may need to go to a Volvo, or even consider something Asian--Murano, Venza, CX9. Or how about a Ford Edge?
