It may have been cost cutting, but it may have been packaging. The ti is very snubbed off in back - I don't think the multilink would physically fit there.
IIRC the Z3 also essentially had the E30 rear.
The rear suspension is one of the things that makes my XR4Ti so much nicer to drive than either of my E30s were. The XR does not suffer from that crazy problem despite having a very similar rear end. Ford Europe did something right! :D
