I had a non-diesel Liberty as a rental for a week, which included significant off-roading as well as highway use. Both the good and bad of it is that it felt like the truck it pretty much is. Steering and on-center feel were vague with no feedback, which made highway use a bit fatiguing, and it was heavy and thirsty. However, it did great off road (I had the part time 4WD system, but Jeep's excellent full time system is available too) and the numb steering helped a lot of rough surfaces. A little more ground clearance would have been nice. The gas V6 produce the low end grunt you want in a utility vehicle, but was otherwise pretty uninspiring and thirsty, so the diesel could be a good choice. I thought the interior was pretty good. If you want a fairly comfy, civilized SUV that can still haul, tow, and off-road then I think the Liberty is a pretty good choice as most of the competition are more 'soft-roaders' (maybe the more basic xterra and much more expensive 4runner aside). Have you also considered the diesel Grand Cherokee? I'm not sure what the cost difference is between the two, I can't think of too much else you would give up for a more comfortable, sophisticated vehicle. Or maybe a little more out there, a diesel Mercedes ML.
