Is importing one from somewhere else an option? All these cars (except BMWs with manual transmissions) are stupid common in California - I can't imagine finding a rust free one would be any problem at all. Finding a 9000 at all might be an issue, but if you found one you could be guaranteed it'd be clean. :)
A friend of mine had a E320 4matic sedan and it was not fast. At 220hp and 3800lbs IIRC (less for RWD), it's no rocketship. Less horsepower and less torque than a 500lb lighter Aero, for instance.
No Subarus or Audis in the mix? The Subaru may have safety concerns and the Audi reliability concerns, but I'd wager at least in the Audi's defense the community support for DIY is a lot better than newer Mercedes. My '99 A4q has been not exactly problem free, but fixes have been easy and inexpensive. I may get shot, but you can save some dough by finding something totally undesirable, like a Malibu Maxx. A little newer, pretty bulletproof, and if you can get over the ugly it's pretty darned utilitarian. Or, what about a small SUV? I think I'd maybe take a Jeep non-Grand Cherokee in a situation like this - cheap, durable, and fun (in a different way).
