I've wondered about the Cross Trek. Most of my friends drive Subies, and one of them for many years drove an Impreza Outback before moving on to a Forester. Subaru has really mixed up the naming of their cars over the years, but in essence, the Impreza Outback was a normal Impreza raised a small amount (like an inch?) with slightly different bumper extensions... basically the same idea as this Cross Trek. He really liked that old Impreza Outback, and is lamenting driving a Forester in contrast... I think had the CrossTrek been available 2 years back and his wife less SUV-enthused, he would have got a CrossTrek.

I have tried a bunch of larger Subies, Forester, Legacy, Outback, over the years and really have been unimpressed... I was hoping to like them, but seats and overall driving experience have been very sub-par coming from Saabs. I think the Cross Trek is a pretty ideally shaped vehicle, I think they look pretty sharp, but I wonder if they actually drive and handle well, and I wonder how good the seats are? until I take one on a long trip I won't know... I bet they are pretty good in snow with the increased clearance. However, I hope the increased clearance doesn't make them closer to a Forester in handling than to an Impreza/WRX... The modern Forester (I'm thinking -2013, I hear they've redesigned for 2014?) handles atrociously... even my subie-lemming friends agree... huge sway over several axes of rotation... the result of building a tallish SUV on a small car platform.

Basically I'd advocate extended driving (aka rent) of the Cross Trek before buying but it does look nice! The BMW almost certainly has more solid handling and better seats, albeit with a higher sticker price... I'd be more interested if they made one like that, but just a tad longer... the X1 looks shorter than the 9-3sc, but I'd have to look up dimensions to know for sure... og9-5 seems about right nowadays for our cargo needs...
