I went from 17" to 16" on my 325i and never looked back. Considering switching from 19" to 17" on my 550i.
I believe 16" to be the sweet spot but Peugeot 106 I drove for a while in Europe had 13" Michelins and was certainly one of the best handling (and riding) cars I have driven. My c900 had terrific handling with 15" tires.
