He had the last model year of the 1.8L A4. Those were fairly small. The new ones are bigger. He got rid of it because he was anticipating a bunch of service items and he didn't trust the local Audi mechanics not to hose him (as minor items seemed expensive and he had heard horror stories from a fellow local Audi driver).
I like the A4 (though I wish they hadn't streamlined the roof rails on the newer avants). But the Germans have definitely added complexity to their cars - which can be nice, but it can be costly also! So having tried newer A4 and BMW options, he seems to have gone back to the Subarus which are a little simpler and less costly to maintain (though some things not so much on that engine)... even though I know he much prefers the driving feel of the Germans...
For me, if things keep going as they are going, Volvo will probably be my first option, and next Audi or BMW. Would be nice to see SAAB return though!
