As much as I like the XC60, I'd tend to agree. I don't think the, what, ~50% price premium of the Volvo is justified by anything other than the name. Well, maybe ultimate performance - I'm sure the Volvo is measurably quicker in several areas. But for most people doing most things, I think the Mazda will probably offer lower long-term ownership costs without sacrificing anything of the ownership experience... unless maybe you're going to be hotfooting it around town. The Mazda will probably offer better resale (as a percentage) when it comes time to sell. The gap between average cars and highline cars is shrinking every day - the stuff separating a Mazda from a Volvo is pretty darned ethereal in any practical sense. If you're not a brand snob, I can't imagine not choosing the Mazda. Personally, I'd take a look at the Ford Edge, but that's mostly because they look pretty darned cool. ;) Otherwise, it about splits the difference between the Volvo and Mazda in all measures (performance, economy, price, etc.). But, seriously, it's mostly just cool looking. ;)
