I didn't and wouldn't comment on the Cruze holding up. I think GM materials have been holding up quite well for quite some period of time. The only note I made about about longevity was resale value, and all current indications show the Cruze's resale is on par with the Elantra, which costs quite a bit less at the dealership.
That TTAC article largely echos my sentiments - the car is bland, boring and underpowered but nicely equipped and fairly durable. Those are attributes applicable to a large degree on everything to roll out of GM in the past 10-15 years. Reasonably well engineered, not very exciting. Those same notes could be written about the last 5-7 years worth of Kias and Hyundais, although those brands have really shined the styling category.
As I said, if you're going to buy a bland commutermobile, you might as well buy the Hyundai. You'll save money up front and not take as big of a depreciation hit at the end. To that end, the Cruze probably makes a solid used car purchase. Buying it new makes about zero financial sense - which is *also* true about most GM vehicles. They are great values a few years in, bad bets new.
