I think one buys one of the older air cooled models for the vintage qualities as a restoration more than just as a performance choice now. Though it is very cool that there is so much compatibility between 911 generations.

Otoh, the Boxster to me is a modern car. Not so much a collector thing, but wow, the lateral forces are something else. If you are primarily looking for that fun element, and not the diy resto experience, yeah, the Boxster is great! I kind of like the vintage car thing, part of the fun for me so the old 911's have some appeal... But I'm sticking to old SAABs for now. My wife would kill me if a 911 in need of "work" showed up in the driveway! Ha! I believe the saying is: "There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche!"
