Ok. I'll say one thing first. I don't care if you've paid $1000 a tire for some prototype tire, good snow tires do not replace good driving habits. Just because you have the best doesn't mean you can drive like its a hot summer day when there's slush on the roads. Forget powdered snow, that stuff is easy to drive in because tires bite into the stuff so well. 1/2 inch of slush on the roads and it's a whole different story.
I sacrifice all performance capabilities when it comes to winter tires. I like a thin tire, so it cuts through snow better, and the sidewalls are usually weaker. So, there goes all my cornering fun :) Hey, but I make it home everyday. And thats only 4 months of the year max.
But, like I said, as far as safety goes a really good tire isn't going to do all the work for you. You have to know how to drive in winter conditions.
