The short shifter does provide a nicer driving experience, I must admit. Yes, you are changing its fulcrum, so effort goes up a little. But you still have the lousy coupling, which causes some of the vague feel, as well as the front motor mount. Replace the shifter bushing at the front of the shift shaft, at the shifter, if yours is old. Do whatever you can to limit vertical travel at front mount.
Someone here cut a piece of an old shifter and screwed it atop his car's - maybe search - it was here a month or so ago. Cheaper and as effective as any aftermarket kit, which does the same exact thing.
To take slop out of the coupling, devise a means to clamp and compress the rubber. May be easier with the later coupling, or the later coupling may just be better. One would assume this to be true, anyway.
