by essentially increasing the base boost using a higher pressure wastegate
actuator. They reprogram the ECU to increase fuel and change timing to
support the increased booost and also to raise the boost cut-off limit to
close to 20 psi.
Using this system has some drawbacks. The major one is that the APC system
can not reduce boost lower than the base boost setting if the system senses
detonation. Base boost can be raised as high as 12 psi with Abbott's system.
Other tuners, particularly those in Sweden, do not change the actuator
and retain the stock base boost.
Both methods produce similar power levels.
I have an Abbott ECU in my '95 Aero. Now that I have more knowlege on the
subject, I think I would seriously look at a Swedish tuner for the upgrade,
if I were to do it again. Probably end up cheaper also.
By the way, I am very satisfied with the performance the Abbott upgrade
yields. Dyno testing on my car has shown at least a 20% increase in torque
and Hp.
