There is quite a bit of difference in performance. I would choose a '96 to '98 as all of the little fixes were done by then. The 2.3 is a different design. Very strong and durable. Capable of producing close to 400 hp with stock internals. If well maintained...will go hundreds of thousands of miles.
There are LPT....170hp, FPT....200hp and HPT...225hp. The LPT and FPT use a Garrett t25 turbo. To upgrade from a LPT to a FPT you need a BPC valve and plumbing plus an FPT ECU. Easy to do. To get to HPT....you need the mitsubishi td04 turbo and ECU.
With that said....you can find a LPT/FPT...plop in a Stage 3 ECU and better exhaust to get 270hp and 340lbs.ft. torque. If you consider the modifications make sure your car is in good all aroud working order. Stage 3 is a pretty good ride. Check out the performance and 9000 BB's.
In example......One of my 9K's has a stage 3 SQR....It is similar to a WRX in acceleration.
Just depends on what you are looking for in a car.
