The problem is the Wheel Hub. The early cars like yours have a larger outside diameter (the part that is inside the brake rotor) and will not clear the larger rotors. Seems odd but the larger rotors have more swept area and a smaller diameter inside the "hat" portion. You can either machine down yours or get later hubs. Both options require new wheel bearings since it can only be done off the car. (Unless maybe one of those on the car brake lathes could somehow reach it.???) Once that is done though you can run 288 or 308mm brakes from a 9-3/900 97>98 or 99>01 9-5 The lines are the same but you have to change the calipers.
