The axle is a semi live axle or twist beam. If the tops of the shocks moved around it would have no impact at all on the axle!!!
A brace could stop the towers from moving relative to each other if disigned right. That will reduce the twisting of the rear body a little bit. What impact that has on the wheel geometry I don't know. But one probably has to deal with the greater evils first and mod all suspension bushings first. As long as the axle is suspended on springs and rubber and moving/twisting all over the place, I can't see how removing a small amount of body deflection is going to be of significant benefit.
Braces in the top of the shock would be useless. Very strong fasteners would have to be located at the top of the 'tower' and at the bottom, also using diagonals. I can't see the point of messing up the interior to such an extent. If you swing the seat forward and examine the metal of that seat opening and how the spring seat and bushing areas integrate into the body structure, things look quite stiff.
