After running the vehicle on a lift, it indeed sounds like a bearing inside the gearbox. Service manager's judgement was an output shaft bearing. So, I guess I'm looking at a rebuild . . . poor timing, the gearbox was just out for the rear main seal & clutch.
He mentioned the Quaife lsd as a good performance upgrade, but didn't have any suggestions re: making the gearbox more durable. Would the cobalt gears be more appropriate if the engine was modded? My long-term plans are to upgrade the chassis & powertrain, & try my hand at autocross & road track events. Not that my 9000 is the best car for those activities, but I've really enjoyed both my Saabs (classic 900 & this 9000) & would like to have some fun with one (& maybe enhance my driving skills along the way).
