I recently bought and used the ElmScan 5 Scan Tool from scantool.net. About the same cost as buying it on ebay, same seller. I used scantool's software. You can download their open source software anytime for free from them, which was a major advantage.
I bought the serial one instead of the USB one incase I decide to use it with an old laptop that doesn't have USB. My current laptop has the recommended usb-serial adaptor so it will work on that too.
