At the time of posting this, this thread is long gone I believe... but here are a few things to think about.
The gearing in these cars is set up to be comfortable, not powerful. Tall gears means that shifting out of 1st gear at 3k rpm into 2nd gear means you are going to be bogging the engine... so driving comfortably (I used to shift at 2500rpm in my non-turbo cars) is less likely to happen while driving aggressively. I hope that makes some sense. Great top speed and highway milage, harder to gauge powerband initially that's all.
As for 3rd gear being weak... I believe it's because the saab APC system monitors heat/knock in the engine head, and if you gun it through 1st/2nd gear a lot of heat is building up... also, 1st and 2nd gears have electronic limitations on torque... so 1st/2nd aren't that great, then the engine is hot, and 3rd doesn't boost all the way.... = weak. What I tend to do is drive normally, using gears 1 through 5 to get to 55mph, then shift down to 3rd and gun it. My 900 2.0T is currently bone stock and on 93 octane on a cold day it will boost almost half-way into the red zone on the gauge in 3rd gear if I do that. Otherwise it won't even hit red if I gun 1st/2nd into 3rd.
Hope that helps.
