Are you talking 15 or 16 inch wheels?
This is my experience for 15x7 et35 w/ 205-55-15 Eagle F1 GS-D2 on a 1986 SPG w/ 1990 SPG springs/hubs and rear axle:
Tires rubbed on my SPG in both the front and rear. With the bolts torqued I could not move the front wheels by hand and it took some effort for the rears - this is with the car off the ground. It would have been worse w/ the car on the ground.
Maybe with a narrow tire the rears would have been okay, but not the fronts.
What tires are/were you running? Brand, model and size please.
And what springs did/do you have on your car?
Now I run 205/55/15 Toyo Proxes 4's on OE SPG wheels and they will rub in the front w/ the wheel cut. If they were on 15x7 +35 the car would barely roll and wouldn't be able to turn much.

FWIW
Most of the 215/45/16 I just looked up run about 8.3/8.4 wide
same as most of the 205/55/15
if we're talking 95-60-15 most of them are 7.9 or less with a few exceptions.
So I expect you may be able to get away w/ 195-60-15 on a 15x7 et35 on a c900 that hasn't been lowered too much.
But if you're running 195's you don't need 7 in wide rims anyway - 6 inches are fine and easier to get on.

I think this is a question of what combination is on the car and there is really no "catch all".
