I have been saved or at least warned ahead of time that a radar gun was on and near by at least 7 times in the last 8 months or so. It let me know to pay attention to my speed and not get a 7mph over without really knowing it. Out of those 7 times in 8 months, I have had two total saves :-) One save bought the radar detector. You can get a cobra for 125.000-150.00 and it has all the laser and radar bands and emergency vehicle warning and some have raid road crossing notification.
You have to get on the brakes right away when it goes off in a wierd area and they cannot pick you up or lock you in if you are decelerating hard. Mine gave me just enough time to hit the brakes and get down close to the speed limit and that was a total save for sure, just happened a few days ago and it payed for itself for sure that day :-)
There are places that it will do no good and if they are waiting with their radar gun off and visually watching for speeding cars and you do not see him and he just points the gun at you and turns it on he will have you at the same time your detector goes off. It will not help you in these types of cases. A long open road with a hill on the end of it, if you are in that flat area and he pops over the hill, you may not get warned in time, so you have to learn your detector somewhat, your route, what areas does it seem to go off at for a false warning?
A lot of people say the detector actually helps them to pay more attention to their speed and the limits as when it goes off for some silly store or something, you tend to look down and make sure you are close to the limit.
