need help; shifter is locked up and ignition won't turn

I went to pick up my car from my indy mechanic after hours, and he had left the car outside for me to pick up. I got into the car to find that the shift lever is locked in the reverse position (5-speed car) and while the key will go into and out of the ignition, the ignition barrel will neither push inward to lock the key nor will it turn at all. I noticed that the car was left in reverse without the parking brake on facing up a slight incline, and it looked like the car had rolled backwards into a small snowbank.
Does anyone know what this problem might be, and whether it would be a simple fix or a serious one?
